Machakos town is a 30 minute drive from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and connects Nairobi County to the Konza Techno City, a Kenya Vision 2030 flagship project that is set to be Africa’s first Silicon Savannah and an oasis of modern living and class.

Since the onset of devolution in Kenya, the government of Machakos County has progressively created a favorable business climate through robust investment and incentive policies. The County plays host to many local and international investment companies that command regional market leadership in mining, hospitality, manufacturing, food, agriculture and many other economic sectors that position the Machakos as a prime location for doing business in Africa.

Machakos County borders Kenya’s Capital on the south, stretching to cover 6,208 sq. kms and sitting on an altitude of 1000 – 1600 meters above sea level. Machakos town serves as the county headquarters’ having been established in 1889 as the Kenya’s first administrative center for the British colony.

With the development of Konza Techno City, the project aims to attract business process outsourcing, software development, data centres, disaster recovery centres, call centres and light assembly manufacturing industries.

Agriculture

Agriculture is the main activity carried out in most of the sub-counties. The County’s agricultural production is dominated by cereals, grain legumes, root crops, honey, mangoes, oranges, avocados, flowers, pineapples, sorghum, sisal and coffee.

Manufacturing

Machakos County is a host of all major manufacturing industries especially in the construction industry in Kenya. Some of these include cement industries, food processing industries, agro-chemicals industries, steel plants and textile industries in EPZ, among others.

Tourism & Entertainment

The county’s breathtakingly scenic landscapes and beautiful terrains combine perfectly with patches of extensive savannah low plains that provide broad opportunities in tourism. The county has identified tourism and entertainment as a priority sector where investors are invited to partner with the county on strategic focal areas including Conference Tourism, Medical Tourism, and Sports Tourism.

The real estate and construction industry in Machakos has experienced exponential growth as private developers increase investments in the real estate and construction industry in response to the huge demand for housing, office space and recreational facilities caused by the rapid growth in the Country’s population, increased foreign direct investment and trade in the region.

The energy sector in Kenya is largely dominated by petroleum and electricity, with wood fuel providing the basic energy needs of the rural communities, urban poor, and the informal sector. In Kenya, electricity is mainly generated from hydro, thermal and geothermal sources.
